John Halpern is a top setter and a top friend, and this puzzle was written to celebrate his 42nd birthday a year or so back. It never appeared in print; it was actually glued into a birthday card!

Since it was composed as a bit of fun there was some very non-Ximenean stuff going on, so this version has a couple of tweaks here and there.
